The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is planning to take up construction of double bedroom flats for the weaker sections in the civic body limits through an innovative scheme, said GHMC Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy.

2 BHK Scheme for weaker sections soon in Hyderabad
The Commissioner said that 2BHK flats would be constructed in identified slums by involving various NGOs. He added that the NGOs would create awareness among slum dwellers and convince them to allow construction in their areas.Janardhan added that that the GHMC would take people’s feedback on the status of drinking water, drainage, electricity, parking and other civic related facilities in their areas.
The proposal was discussed during a review meeting held by the Commissioner with Urban Community Development, Housing, Engineering, Mepma and other connected departments on Wednesday.
Janardhan Reddy felt that previously, housing schemes like JNNURM were taken up without involving local residents and they did not get the desired results. The JNNURM scheme was launched with a budget of Rs 20,000 crore. However, it benefitted only 30 per cent of identified beneficiaries.
In the first phase, the GHMC will take up the construction of double bed rooms flats in 30 basthis for which proposals are being planned.
Additional Commissioner (UCD) Jayaraj Kennedy, UCD Project Director Shashkirana Chary and senior officials from Housing, Engineering, MEPMA, voluntary organisations and representatives participated in the review meeting.
