The Government of Telangana state on Saturday (18-04-2015) appointed in-charge vice-chancellors to five Telangana state universities, Palamuru university (PU) in Mahboobnagar, Mahatma Gandhi University in Nalgonda, Kakatiya University in Warangal, Satavahana University in Karimnagar and Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University in Hyderabad.
Prof. G Bhagyanarayana has been named as the in-charge VC of Palamuru university on the same day his tenure as regular VC came to an end. Prof K Veera Reddy and Prof Elluri Siva Reddy, who have served as regular VCs of Satavahana and Telugu Universities respectively till April 18 will be the new in-charge VCs to the same universities.
Kakatiya university (KU) and Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU), which have been headless for past few months will now be headed by top officials from the education department. T Chiranjeevulu, Commissioner, School Education will act as the new in-charge VC of KU, while A Vani Prasad, Commissioner of Collegiate and Technical Education will lead the MGU in the position of in-charge VC.
Perhaps, Telangana is the only state in India, where more than half of the state universities are headed by non-academicians. Now, six of the all ten state universities in TS are administered by bureaucrats. The in-charge VCs of only four universities, Palamuru University, Telugu University, Jawaharlal Nehru Architecture and Fine Arts University and Satavahana University are from academics background.
As the process of appointing regular VCs is yet to kick off, the universities are likely to begin the next academic year under in-charge VCs.
