The Khairatabad Ganesh will set a record of sorts this year. To mark the Khairatabad Ganesh Utsav Committee’s 60th year of installation, the Ganesh idol, in the form of Kailasha Vishwaroopa Maha Ganapathi, will be 60 feet tall this year. Also, the mega laddu will weigh about five tonnes (5,000 kilograms).
“The 60-feet-tall idol was made under the supervision of Chennai-based sculptor C Rajendran, who has been preparing the Khairatabad Ganesh for over two decades.
This year the pandal organisers have used clay from Chennai, 800 bags (each weighing about 50 kg) of PoP, 60 bags of jute, 40 bags of chalk and over 15 tonnes of iron for the tallest-ever Khairatabad Ganesh idol,” organising secretary of Khairatabad Ganesh Utsav Committee, S Raj Kumar, told TOI.
“This year we are celebrating the 60th anniversary of Khairatabad Ganesh. Freedom fighter S Sankarayya had started the Ganesh Utsav Committee at Khairatabad in 1954,” Raj Kumar added.
Bangalore-based contractor D Sridhar Babu has been providing a huge crane free of cost to transport the tallest Ganesh idol for immersion.
Raj Kumar said the mega laddu would reach the city in the wee hours of Friday traversing nearly 500 kms from Tapeswaram village of East Godavari district.
A special puja would be performed in the presence of governor ESL Narasimhan on Friday at 9am after which visitors would be allowed at the pandal.
