“Although a proposal to make Cherlapally an alternative terminal was aired, the location doesn’t have sufficient land to suit our plans for a big terminal and ample circulating area,” said SCR general manager Ravindra Gupta. He was speaking at a meeting held to discuss the performance of SCR till now this year.
SCR will need at least 250 acres for a terminal with five to six platforms to solve the congestion problem. An alternative site that is being considered is Nagulapally, said Mr Ravindra Gupta. About MMTS-II, he said, “It is one of the most important projects for us in the state and we will see the deadline is met. We will monitor its progress.”
The current year is the 50th anniversary of the SCR. Speaking about the performance of SCR, Mr Ravindra Gupta said, “During the last fiscal 168 unmanned level crossings were eliminated and in the current fiscal 35 have been eliminated. By the end of 2017, there will be no unmanned level crossings.”
Security has been strengthened in trains by deploying 414 RPF personnel on escort duty in 210 express trains. The integrated security system with CCTV monitoring has been a huge success. Currently, the system is operational at Secunderabad, Hyderabad and Tirupati and has been of great help in apprehending criminals, he said.
