The Chief Minister of Telangana K.Chandrasekhar Rao on Wednesday said develop a alternative water body Vinayaka Sagar Hyderabad at Indira Park for immersion of Ganesh idols to protect Tankbund from the perils of pollution.
The CM, who inspected Hussainsagar lake and held a review meeting on Wednesday, observed that large-scale idol immersion was being taken up during Vinayaka Chaturthi and Navaratri festivities which could be shifted to the proposed water body at Indira Park.
Given the sentiments on immersion attached with Hussainsagar lake, the new water body should be filled with water from it and developed with all facilities, he said, according to a press release from the CM’s office.
Stating that cleaning of Hussainsagar lake need to be taken up as a people’s movement, Mr.Rao said a four-day ‘shramadanam’ would be held for the purpose. Apart from the Chief Minister and his cabinet colleagues, elected representatives, students and others would have to be part of the initiative, he said.
A meeting would also be scheduled soon with MPs, MLAs, MLCs, Mayor and corporators along with the Ganesh Utsav Samithi representatives.
When officials told the Chief Minister that available pipelines were able to cater only 368 million litres of 527 million litres of sewer that flows into the lake daily, he instructed setting up of diversion canals to ensure the polluted water does not enter Hussainsagar.
Mr.Rao also asked the Advocate General, Ramakrishna Reddy to have issues of encroachments along the water body that were in the courts, resolved at the earliest possible.
