Odd Even Formula in Hyderabad
According to the Odd-Even formula, vehicles whose registration number ends with an odd number should ply on odd dates, and those ending with even numbers on even dates.
It was implemented in Delhi for 15 days from January 1. Vehicles which run on CNG, two-wheelers, emergency vehicles and other categories of vehicles are exempted from this.
It is learnt that officials from various departments here expressed the need to implement such a plan in the city to bring down pollution levels and traffic issues in the city. The transport department and Hyderabad traffic police had earlier discussed the idea.
Officials from the transport department said that before the idea was proposed, data needed to be gathered on the number of private and public transport vehicles, and vehicles with odd and even registration numbers.
“A study needs to be taken up to know if public transport facilities can cater to the needs of the people who have to leave vehicles at home.
The field situation needs to be understood before the Odd-Even plan is proposed,” said an official. Air Quality Index Value was recorded at 105 in Punjagutta, 120 in and around Zoo Park area in December.
Senior social scientist at Telangana State Pollution Control Board N Ravinder said the key to reduce pollution levels in the city was to reduce the number of private vehicles and increase public transport.
“The condition of roads should also improve. At present, vehicles move at a speed of 8 to 10 km per hour in some areas. If the speed increases, pollution levels will come down.
Also, all vehicles should have Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate. ‘No PUC, No Petrol’ condition should be implemented,” Ravinder suggested.
