Kinnerasani holds magical charm for nature lovers

02/11/2020 By admin

The enormous Eco-tourism potential of the sprawling Kinnerasani wildlife sanctuary, a treasure trove of rich biodiversity, at Yanambailu in Palvancha mandal is waiting to be harnessed.

Nestled in the lap of nature, the sanctuary derives its name from the Kinnerasani river, a lifeline for farmers and Kothagudem Thermal Power Station and other industries in Palvancha and Kothagudem divisions in the district.

Spread in an area of 635 sq km, the sanctuary is an abode of diverse flora and fauna besides wildlife, including spotted deer, bison and tigers.

The scenic surroundings of the Kinnerasani reservoir bounded by lush green vegetation offer an enchanting view to the visitors.

A deer park housing little over 80 spotted deer nearby the scenic Kinnerasani dam site is the major attraction for tourists. The vast Kinnerasani reservoir harbours number of crocodiles and other aquatic species.

How to Reach Kinnerasani

Located at a distance of about 100 km from Khammam and 300 km from Hyderabad, the picturesque eco-tourism site has a lot in store for not only tourists but botanists and nature lovers.

The spot is well connected by road just 11 km from Palvancha town and 45 km from the temple town of Bhadrachalam, making it an ideal and highly potential tourist destination.

A glass house christened “Addala Meda” with wooden flooring and nine cottages were constructed by the Singareni Collieries at a vantage point abutting a small hillock about one km from the Kinnerasani dam on the banks of the river.

The cottages served as holiday homes for the Singareni employees for several years in the past. However, they were left abandoned ever since the naxalites reportedly blasted the Addala Meda in 2001.

The cottages which are now lying in shambles were built in a way to facilitate a panoramic view of the entire river stretch and explore nature’s bounty.

Although there are no accommodation facilities available for tourists at the Kinnerasani project site, several private lodges are located in Palvancha, Kothagudem and Bhadrachalam towns within a radius of 50 km from the tourist spot.

Proposals have been sent to the Telangana State Tourism Development Corporation (TSTDC) for revival of the food court and introduction of boating facility in the reservoir, says Suman Chakravarthi, District Tourism Officer, Khammam.

A TSTDC team had recently visited the Kinnerasani dam to explore ways for developing facilities at the tourist spot, he said, adding that the site will emerge as a leading eco-tourism spot in the entire Telangana State if the dilapidated cottages were reconstructed for the benefit of tourists.

Rachakonda Fort

Rachakonda was unique that in spite of its small size and frequent tensions, Telugu literature received major patronage and flourished. Most famous was Sarvajna Singha Bhoopala III of the Recherla clan, the last king of Rachakonda, who patronized both Bammera Pothana and Srinatha – legendary Telugu poets. By Shitab Khan’s time the Bahmanis had recently acquired this important buffer state on their eastern frontiers.

From 1480 to 1485 Shitab Khan was the governor of Rachakonda (near Narayanpur in present Nalgonda district, Telangana). He seems to have taken advantage of the internal turmoils of the Bahmanis and declared his independence in 1503, ruling from the Rachakonda, Warangal and Khammam forts from 1503 to 1512.

Rachakonda the fort, offers a good example of medieval Hindu fort architecture. The construction is of cyclopedia masonry, and the whole fort is devoid of the use of mortar.

The gateways to the fort offer good examples that highlight the use of monolith pillars, beams and lintels and is most interesting to the history connoisseur. The fort walls are quite typical with stone cuts and diversified and laid on the side facing the outside with mudslopes on the interior.

Rachakonda forms an ideal case to understand medieval Hindu town planning and architecture. The fort even adheres to Viswakarma’s Vasthu Sastra on Hindu fort architecture. One can observe that the fort was structured as upper and lower tiers with the city lying on the south eastern side of the fort, partly sprawling outside the boundary wall.

Like the Kakatiyas, the Recherla Padmanayakas also patronised Saivam. Most of the temples constructed here were of Siva.
The Bhoothan temple, the Siva temple and the Veerabhadra Swamy temple were among the very few to name. There was also one massive kacheri where the locals believe the kings organised dance and other cultural programmes.

Very close to these constructions, recently a farmer unearthed an eight-foot-high Sivalingam, which was installed in nearby place. The Sivalingam has been drawing a large number of devotees every day. If you proceed further, you would enter into Tippaigudem village of Manchal mandal in Rangareddy district. The tiny Rachakonda village, located on the foothills of the fort, falls under Nalgonda district only.

A massive entrance with close to 15-feet boundary wall welcomes us in to the fort. On the left side of the fort, there are two historical Sri Rama temples where the locals celebrates Sri Ramanavami in a grand way. The fort also has two naturally carved water tanks and many other interesting structures.

Telangana cinema city at Rachakonda

The Telangana state government has started scouting for suitable land to set up the mega Cinema City that will be spread over 2,000 acre near the city.

Official sources said Rachakonda hillocks area, located on the Nalgonda-Ranga Reddy border, is being considered. Industry department officials say the area is suitable to set up the Cinema City as the Shamshabad airport is just 25 km away and the site lies along the NH-65 and ORR, providing world-class connectivity.

The site proposed by the Telangana state government for a new Cinema City is very near Ramoji Film City, which is less than 10 km, and the TS government’s Cinema City is expected to give tough competition to the Film City.
